Image Bank

Image Bank
The following images will relate to the images that I want to present within my work, by looking at these images it will give me more ideas on how I want to present my images and the images I want to take.

These images were all taken by Simon Roberts a British photographer who also expressed British culture and identity through landscape photography. His work has influenced my work significantly because of the way that he is able to show the British lives through these landscapes. In these landscapes there are some people present which isn't stereotypically what you would find in a normal landscape image but Roberts follows the idea that these people are features to the image and help tell the story of the image. For example, in the first image of the beach each person within the image tells a different story, there are a group of young boys standing around but there are also older people which shows how the landscape brings the people together. This idea links to Simon Roberts wanting to include people within the landscape to tell a story. All of these images that I have taken from Simon Roberts link to the idea of British culture and will help me develop my work in a way where I can produce a series of images that show British culture through landscape photography.

These are not photographs they are paintings painted by John Constable, I chose to research into his work because some of his paintings like the ones above link into the idea of British culture. I have chosen to use these images which are taken in the countryside because I am going to go to areas similar to this so my images will look similar to this. His images are also very similar to those of Simon Roberts because he includes features that some artists/photographers would cut out of their images like the cows and the people. In the second image we can see two people on a boat in the river, two swans in the river and a few cows on the riverbank. These symbols can relate to British culture and identity as we relate swans with the stereotypical Queen's birds in England and cows are always stereotypically seen on fields within England. By analysing these images it will also help me establish the images that I am going to take and the way I am going to express British culture and identity within them.

I chose to research Waltham Abbey in Google because I wanted to see the images that people have taken of Waltham Abbey as it will help me compose my images that I take in this area. In these images the British culture is expressed because it shows nature within the town and it shows the religious aspects because of the church. Also, in the second image it shows the age of the town because there is a building included with a thatched roof which shows how some of the buildings have been around for a long time as not many modern houses are thatched roofs. By including these images within my image bank it gives me a starting point and helps me get ideas for the types of images I am going to take.

I have also researched photos taken by Martin Parr because I want to do a shoot at Clacton beach so I believe that his shoot focussing on English people at the beach will aid me within this shoot. In his work he documents how obsessive English people are with the way they look and the food they eat on holiday. He uses saturated images as this emphasises the colours within the image, he also uses the saturation in the images to emphasise the tans on the British people which insinuates that they are only obsessed with the way they look. By looking at these images it makes people think about the things they generally care about for example, they care more about the way they look than what it is actually going on around them. Also, I like the symbolism that Parr uses in his images with the Union Jack flags because this shows British culture to an extent as it symbolises British identity. There is symbolism in both the images above, the seagulls are the standard bird found at the beaches in England and chips are also the stereotypical food eaten at the beach. In the second image there is symbolism that relates the child in the background to the toy in the foreground as it insinuates the fun had at the beach for the children as well as the adults. Martin Parr's images will influence my work at the beach but I'm not sure how far I can take his work as I may not use the saturation aspect of his work.

These images are all of London landscapes which is what my project is mainly based around, I have chosen to relate my images to these from google because they show the London landscapes well. There is no real meaning behind these images because they are just taken to attract tourists to these areas. I have chosen these images because I like their composition and think that if I compose my images similarly to these it will help me achieve a good image displaying British Culture. All of these images show famous landscapes within London which I am planning on documenting within my shoots because these landmarks represent British identity as they explore the reasons why tourists come to London. The image of St. Paul's Cathedral is documented in black and white which can explore more connotations because it can show how there are becoming more and more buildings along the Thames that soon there will be no green land as it is all being taken away from us. I could document my images in black and white to give a similar connotation but I think that by documenting my images in colour it will reveal the happiness and brightness within the images which is the side I am trying to bring out of London.

These images are all taken in St James' Park next to Buckingham Palace in London, I have taken these images from google. I want to go to this place when I am shooting because there is a link between it and Waltham Abbey which is where I will also be shooting. In Waltham Abbey there is a lot of nature which will link the images I take with the images that I take within this location. I think this area is aesthetically pleasing which is why I want to go there, also within the park the landscapes show features of the London landmarks which links to British identity and culture. As well as documenting nature values of Britain I also want to show the building work around London because I want to link the nature parts with the city parts as it shows how there are parts of Britain which have been changed with tons of building work. I have chosen these images from google because they are the best images that explore this area, there are no connotations of these images as they all are to make the area look inviting for tourists.

These images above show symbols of Britain, these symbols all represent British culture and identity as they are what is stereotypically associate with Britain and London. These images don't necessarily have connotations because they are just showing symbols of Britain to express the identity. In my illustrated project proposal and my mind map I have expressed my want to show British culture and identity through symbolism because it will fit in well with the landscapes, I could also use these symbols within the landscapes to express Britain further.
