Mid-Term Evaluation

Mid-Term Evaluation

At the beginning of my project I wanted to discover British Culture around Britain using landscape and documentary photography. I believe that this idea has been constant throughout my work because I have used these two types of photography to express British Culture. My idea has stayed the same throughout my shoots although I believe I may have focused more on the landscapes rather then the symbolism around Britain. The landscape photography has helped express this subject because it shows the different scenes we see in and around Britain. Also, the documentary photography has helped when showing the activities that go on around the areas I have explored. So far I believe I have explored British Culture well as I have captured different areas of Britain and made it clear the how different these places are. Capturing the beach has shown how British people behave in a different environment other than their home, capturing a smaller town has shown how the majority of people live around Britain and capturing Central London has shown the tourist places to visit in Britain. To progress my idea I want to photograph objects that link well with Britain and British culture.

I think all my shoots have been successful as they all show British Culture. In the first shoot I photographed the beach and I believe that it was successful because it showed the different activities and how people lived around the areas. I also took images in a small town called Waltham Abbey which I think is successful because it emphasised the importance of the smaller towns rather than concentrating on the main places. Finally, I have photographed central London specifically Westminster because this is where the majority of the famous landmarks are, I think this shoot was successful because it showed all the elements of Britain that people immediately think of. There are elements of each shoot that I can improve on which I have presented in my fourth shoot where I went back to Waltham Abbey and photographed more when receiving feedback.

Within my shoots the main element that needs improving is the composition of my shoots, rather then just taking one image of something I should take various images so I can see which one is better. I need to compose my images by zooming or getting closer to the object to block out all the unwanted items. With composition the majority of my images are all centered, when photographing further I need to explore further than just centering my images as it can become repetitive and boring. I could explore the rule of thirds more and have the landscape sitting on different thirds of the image making it more interesting and maybe focusing on the sky or the foreground. Also, I need to get used to using a tripod because this will capture better landscape photography as handheld doesn't always capture a straight image.

To progress my work I want to improve on these elements I have previously mentioned. Also, I want to try and travel around London more and capture the other famous landmarks that I haven't already. This includes travelling to Buckingham Palace and Tower Bridge to explore Britain further and capture the stereotypical ideas we think of when researching Britain. Instead of focusing on the landscape photography I want to incorporate more objects into my shoots which will show the symbolism that I mentioned in my illustrated proposal. These objects will include traditional British food such as chips and ice cream. So far I believe my shoots are going well, by improving these elements they will progress further.

  1. OK good I can see how your mid project evaluation line with the future plans that you have and the mind map that you have posted on objects which signify British identity.... I agree with your point on framing.. I look forward to seeing the work progress further.
